Government Degree College Gurez was established in the year 2008. The college is permanently affiliated to University of Kashmir and offers undergraduate programmes in Arts and Science under CBCS and now NEP from 2022. In  2011 it was included in the list of colleges prepared under section 2 (f) 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 under the head Government Colleges. With campus area spreading over 83.5 kanals, the college is located at Wanpora of Gurez Valley - nestled in the high altitude Himalayan ranges of the northern Jammu and Kashmir and home to a Shina speaking Dard tribe. The college is the prime institution of higher learning in the area offering as many as 11 courses including some professional ones to cater the needs of students from different background. Besides the college is increasingly focused on the all-round development of students’ by exposing them to different events and programmes such debates, conferences, seminars, essay competition and other cultural programmes. Since, the college has a well maintained playground, students time and again participate in various sports related programmes and activities as well. The college has a separate Academic Block, Multi-purpose Sports Hall, Canteen and Residential Huts for staff members. The Academic Block has seven (7) large fully furnished lecture theatres, four (4) science labs, one (1) library, one (1) conference Hall, two (2) staff rooms, NSS Office, Sports office, administrative office and a Computer Lab consisting of 15 internet connected computers. The college has a very rich library with more than 6 thousand books and journals. The library has a Reading Hall and Browsing Centre. The college also offers Bus facility to the far-off students.
